Shipping costs for homeware orders
A light vase in a large protective carton can be charged on dimensional rather than actual weight. The packed dimensions and carrier divisor determine which weight applies.

How volumetric weight is calculated
For routes that use dimensional weight, multiply length × width × height in centimetres and divide by the carrier's quoted divisor. Compare that result with actual weight under the quoted terms.
Illustration only: a 50 × 40 × 40 cm carton is 80,000 cm³. With a hypothetical divisor of 6000, its dimensional weight is 13.3 kg. If the packed goods weigh 5 kg, confirm which weight the specific quote charges.
What actually reduces it
- Repacking, when safe — compare measured carton dimensions before and after removing excess space or nesting units. Savings depend on the item, protection and route.
- Buying nesting designs where the range allows it. Three nesting baskets ship as barely more than one.
- Asking sellers not to pre-assemble anything that ships flat.
- Requesting a sea-freight quote as well as air. Sea freight may have a lower variable cost for bulky cargo, but local and minimum charges matter.
The trade-off repacking creates
Removing retail packaging can save volume but can also increase breakage risk. If repacking is feasible, retain tested inner protection and compare the measured packed dimensions.
Where the retail box is the product — a gift-boxed item you will sell boxed — it stays, and the volume is simply part of the cost.
Compare route quotes
- Express or air freight: confirm the quoted divisor, chargeable weight, transit range and destination charges.
- Sea LCL: compare the cubic-metre basis with minimum, consolidation, port and destination charges.
- Full-container options: compare total cost only when the packed cargo volume and destination justify them.
- For fragile pieces, include packing cost and damage terms in every comparison.
